My Story
Maurice Mercer was raised to contribute to his community. His grandfather was greatly admired for helping thousands of working families build better lives; his mother was a caring nurse, his father, a proud veteran. That’s part of the reason why he has such a strong desire to make District 6 better. He graduated from Troy University with a degree in Business Administration which he now uses as an account executive for a Fortune 500 company still finding time to devote countless hours to public service.
After being elected the first African-American on Pelham City Council, Mercer served three terms including President of the Council from 2020-2025. He earned the distinction of Advanced Certified Municipal Officer. For three years in a row he was nominated Public Servant of the Year. He earned this by care and attention to community building, fiscal responsibility and transparent government - the same issues he will focus on in Congress.
Maurice has dedicated his life to public service, community leadership, and improving the quality of life for families across Alabama. Throughout his career, he has served on numerous boards, committees, and nonprofit organizations focused on strengthening communities, expanding opportunities, and serving others.
A strong advocate for economic development, Maurice has worked to attract new businesses and investment to the region, helping create jobs and support local growth. During his years on the Pelham City Council and as Council President, he consistently championed public safety, supporting the men and women of the Police and Fire Departments with the resources and tools needed to serve the community effectively.
His tenure helped usher in significant community improvements, including the opening of a new recreation center, a new public library, expansion of parks and family-friendly amenities, and support for the formation and growth of the Pelham City School System. He also played a role in bringing professional sports and entertainment opportunities to the city, addressing environmental concerns, investing in infrastructure, and promoting responsible growth.
Known for his accessibility and transparency, Maurice maintained an open-door policy, supported live-streaming public meetings to increase government accountability, and worked to ensure citizens had a voice in the decisions affecting their community. His leadership has always been guided by a simple principle: putting people first and leaving the community stronger for future generations. Whew; that’s a lot. But he’ll do even more as your Congressperson.
Last but not least, Maurice cherishes his role as husband to educator Dr. Amanda Mercer and father to three lovely girls Emma, Katie and Natalie.
